ENERGY STAR was introduced by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 60 different kinds of products as well as new homes and commercial and industrial buildings that meet strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the EPA. Last year alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved $18 billion on their energy bills while reducing the greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of 34 million vehicles.

Why can?t tech products and services just work? Common Sense Tech look beyond the specs of gadgets and services and instead focuses on how well they fulfill real-life needs.

Hulu: Make your own clip

My guess is that it also reduces piracy, because even if clips are ir use, watching a clip on YouTube may encourage others to seek out full content, authorized or not. Instead, authorized clips can help people discover the sources of authorized content.

Danny SullivanDanny Sullivan is a journalist who has covered the search and internet marketing space for over 15 years. Adobe to charge Flash coders to use premium featuresFlash Player 11.2 and AIR 3.2 arrived today. But starting in August 考研论坛, Adobe will require programmers to share 9 percent of app revenues when console-quality Flash games.

I also hope more source content itself comes online in authorized ways. You cant clip whats not offered. I cant share with you a classic scene from Modern Family when Phil is excited about getting aniPad, not from an official source. That episode isnt online. But there are plenty of poor quality clips of it on YouTube. Theres a better way than that.

Digital Media

Using the screen, you can use sliders to select where you want a particular clip to begin and end from a given episode. Once youve made your selection, you can copy the embed code to use on your blog:

One downside is that theres no way to zoom in to the particular area youre working on. In other words — see in the screenshot above, how close the beginning and end points are? Its hard to move those little sliders around.

Apple willing to issue refunds to iPad buyers in AustraliaOffer comes after consumer commission finds Apple misled buyers by labeling the device as 4G-capable when it actually operates at a different frequency.

Another improvement might be to allow mash-ups, or compiling several clips together. Dwight goes on about bloggers several times further in the episode. It would be nice if ns could edit these all together.

Poop-powered zoo cart a dung deal in DenverA gasification system is set to convert more than 90 percent of the Denver Zoos waste into energy that can, among other things, fuel a rickshaw.

Its not pretty, but it does work. The clip will play full screen in a browser. Unfortunately, using the link to share in something like Twitter, Google+ or Facebook wont create a thumbnail of the video, nor can you watch it within these services. But you cant watch regular clips within them either, it seems. Hopefully, that will change.

Some wishes

Even better would be a way that after one person has made a custom clip, that clip could be made available to other ns via Hulu. That would save time for everyone, ns and Hulu alike.

Look at the embed code, and youll see a URL that begins with more characters. Copy that URL. Heres how it looks for the clip I made above:

Another downside is that you cant generate just a link to the clip, if you just want to share it on Twitter or Facebook, rather than embed it on your own blog. But heres a way around that.

Everyone wins

In allowing clips to be made like this, Hulu helps ns stay ns, rather than potentially being upset that they cant find a clip of what they want to share — or worse, a clip that gets pulled down from YouTube or elsewhere.

Like many people, I often want to share a television or video scene with others. Unfortunately, finding quality clips of want you want can be hard. The good news is thatHuluhas been my life easier.

For example,The Officerecently did a hilarious sendup of what it would be like if the fictional Sabre company tried to have its own stores like Apple. There was a great scene in which Dwight Schrute explains the importance of bloggers to the stores success on launch day.

A tip is to make use of the Preview button over to the right of the sliders. It allows your current selection to play. Youll also be shown the current time for any point in the clip as it plays. Make a note of the time, and that can make it easier to move the sliders to the exact time you want.

Want to share a scene from your vorite TV show? Hulu makes it easy, a plus for ns and for content owners concerned about copyright violations.

For me, this is a classic scene. However, its not one that NBC decided should be posted on the The Offices official video clipspage, nor is it a clip that Hulu offers throughits ownofficial page for The Office.

What to do? I suspect for many, they resort to uploading their own clips. For others, they look to see if someone else has uploaded a clip. With the scene above, it was easy for me to findclipsof it posted to YouTube.

Theres always YouTube, but….

Cutting Edge

Posting short clips like this is probably legal, deemed ir use. But that doesnt prevent the clips being challenged by copyright holders and removed. Even if theyre retained, many clips are of poor quality.

The sound of crickets: VC offices on Y Combinator Demo DayOver the years, Paul Graham and his partners have graduated 384 companies from their influential incubator. Today, 65 new startups went on stage to vie for investors attention and dollars.

Finally, it makes for a better user experience. You can watch a high-quality clip from a location that you know is going to last, at least in the short term. If Hulu loses the rights to host some of this content, I do fear the clips will disappear.

Theres one obvious reason that so many startups are building their Web sites on .co domains: the good .com names are long gone. Coming up with a company name is hard enough. Finding an available domain nearly impossible. Theyre either in use or, more likely, have been snapped up by domain investors (lets save the term cybersquatter for those going after trademark names) betting that a deep-pocketed buyer would come along.

Im referring to.CO Internet, the Miami company that fought hard to land a contract with the government of Colombia so it could commercialize the countrys top-level-domain, or TLD.

Yes, the buzz at this years South by Southwest Interactive has been around social apps likeHighlight and Glanceehoping for a Twitter-like breakout. But theres another hot startup here that gets little press and yet is everywhere.

Taking advantage of the domain shortage

More importantly to Calle is that evidence of his efforts are everywhere: Case has rebranded his Startup America Partnership toS.co, and a slew ofstartups here–Bumpercrop.co, Tailored.co, Gourmair.co, Cardflick.co–are proudly displaying their .co brand.

At last years SXSW, founder and CEO Calle could barely get a party invite. This year, he was hobnobbing and sharing stages with the likes of Reid Hoffman, Steve Case, and big-time angel investor Dave McClure of 500Startups.

Now, not even three years later, in his own way hes his mark on the development of the Web–and thats why he was everywhere to be seen around Austin at SXSW.

Calles first success grew out of the 1990s boom. He founded TeRespondo, which was a pay-per-click search advertising network that was big in Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina. It ended up going bankrupt with the dot-bust in 2000 but then had a comeback of sorts that resulted in a sale toYahoo in 2005for an undisclosed amount.

Calle said the companys revenue for the past 12 months is about $25 million, which is an impressive number when you consider the names have only been available since for a year and half. The business is already profitable, he said, although he wont share details.

Calle persisted, and after dealing with several government agencies, managed to put together a bid to run the .co extension as a commercial business. He went toe-to-toe with the r larger Versign. (Another bidder had dropped out).

Its also, of course, about money. Since .co rolled out to the public in July 2010, about 1.3 million have been registered. That might not sound like a lot considering there are some100 million .com names registered. But compared with some other TLD efforts–remember .mobi?–its a smashing success.

This is where ideas are being born, said Calle. We want to be at the point of inception.

Many aghast at Facebook friends politics, study findsIt seems, astonishingly, that people arent quite so miliar with how politically peculiar their Facebook friends are. At least thats what a Pew Study says. It also says 75 percent post something political.

Suddenly, the outfit behind the .co domain is everywhere, even if many people barely notice. Its all part of Juan Diego Calles shrewd strategy.

Keeping prices high

If youre a domain squatter, doing that on .co is three times more expensive than a .com, said Calle. We control the pricing. Its about getting quality sites built…We dont want to create a domain ghetto.

Cutting Edge

.CO Internet spends a lot on marketing, hosting parties here and elsewhere, and advertising during last two Super Bowls. But Calle has not gone after the mass market by pushing cheap prices.

Googles entertainment strategy is in disarrayGoogle Music no longer exists as a standalone service. Google TV was an embarrassment. YouTube may lose music videos next year. Sources say not everybody at YouTube and Android is pulling in the same direction.

Working with Colombia

Yet the domain shortage is only part of the explanation for .cos success. Calle has made an concerted effort to define .co as a place that new startups would want to hang their virtual shingle–if not Brooklyn cool, certainly Silicon Valley cool.

He has, in ct, intentionally set the prices higher than other domain extensions as a way of discouraging speculators from hoarding thousands or tens of thousands of names, as many so-called domainers do with .com names.

During that time, he quickly learned the value and difficulty of getting a good domain name. Shortly after he sold the company, someone mentioned to him that Colombia–Calles native country–was essentially sitting on Internet gold and doing little with it. The big appeal was that .co suggests company, and thus provided a decent alternative to .com.

Someone came up to me and said, You guys are like Brooklyn, Calle told me during a packed SXSW party that he was sponsoring withTech Cocktailto showcase startups. Youre like where the cool guys in N.Y. want to be.

And in August 2009, the Ministry of Communications of the Republic of Colombia awarded the contract to .CO Internet. The day we submitted our proposal and the day it was awarded were highlights of my life, said Calle.

The one black eye on .CO Internets resume came when Overstock, which paid $350,000 for O.co and rebranded the businesses, decided toretreat to Overstock.com–an effort that hurt .cos image but that Calle blames on Overstock.coms marketing missteps.

Crave

The domain business was taking off around then, as the PPC networks of Yahoo and Google were static, ad-filled pages incredibly lucrative, asI wrote about in this article. Some big domain operators, such asthis one I wrote about in 2007, even tried to do deals with Colombia but never had any luck.

Cutting Edge

Geek Gestalt

The .co name was in use, but it was only available to companies in Colombia and the names all had awkward addresses like Coffee.com.co. In addition, the process to register a name was laborious.

Calle set the wholesale price at $20–before they get marked up by registrars such as GoDaddy. By contrast, Versign, the registry that runs the .com extension, just raised the wholesale price of a .com name from$7.34 to $7.85.
