Theres an awareness of the differences between a novel and a script. A novel might be a hundred thousand words; a screenplay is twenty thousand words. Eighty percent is gone off the map. That’s the first thing you have to realize. Whenever I work on a film I have three rules, only three. I tell them to every screenwriter. I say, ‘Lets retain the spirit and the intent of the overall story.’ If you look atThe Lucky One, what was the intent? Its a journey. Its a healing journey for both of them that they undertake. This is what it’s really about. Whats the spirit of the story? It should feel real. These should be characters that you feel like you can know. They should have honesty and integrity, Sparks said.

I didnt write that line, Sparks admitted and laughed. But you know when it works. That is not from the book. That was the brilliant screenwriter. You know when things work. Sometimes it takes a while to get there. Often when Im writing a passage its more about the exact mood that Im trying to create. Youll put something down and youll say,考研论坛. ‘Thats not exactly right,’ so theres a lot of tweaking. Sometimes youre not even sure what kind of mood youre trying to make. Its like, what did that mean? Was there a sense of melancholy? What was the desperation? There was a search for meaning in the way he said it in this particular line. It might take you a little bit — ‘Gosh, was it melancholy or desperation? No, no, no, it’s a search for meaning,’ and then you try to find the exact right words to use. Then you rely on the director and the actor to pull it off. So to me its always more about the meaning than the specific word.

For me it was fine. In the end you really want to make the best film that you can, and in the reality of the film world you have things like budgets. If you film here you can do other things that you might think are beneficial to the story. It’s the same kind of life though. Really that was the spirit and intent of the story, and I thought that was captured, Sparks told Movie Fanatic.

That’s what they look like. They look like young men. They dont look thirty-eight or thirty-nine. Its not that kind of war these days. These are kids who join right out of high school. Thats the ct. Most of them are nineteen, so you wanted someone believable about that. The great thing about working with Zac was he brought so much passion and enthusiasm to his character as believable as possible. Part of that is because a lot of Zacs friends are in the military. The ones he went to high school with, theyre in the military too. Hes like, ‘Theyre all my age essentially.’ Yet he was not in the military, and the work he put in it was not easy. He was getting up at three. He grew up in this role. Hes a young man in this role. I couldnt have been happier. To me he looks exactly like this, and his performance was incredible.

You did that in the story and in the character, so you say, ‘Spirit in the intent of the story, spirit in the intent of the character, and then make the best film that you possibly can. Screenwriters love to hear this. Theyre like, ‘Oh thats great, so I can perhaps combine this character. I can takeA Walk to Remember, which he did, which was a novel based in 1954, and I can make it contemporary.’ Why? Because it hits rule number three: the best film that we possibly can, so it will be more relatable to the kids these days.

Theyre kids. These kids are twenty. Theyre twenty-one. Theyre eighteen. Zac was twenty-four, so to me Zac looked exactly like these kids. So there was a tremendous amount of believability to who he actually was, Sparks said.

Sparks:It probably has less to do with my ith than my worldview, though I guess that could come from ith. I personally think that most people, most of the time, do the right thing. I just believe this. Otherwise, the world would be chaos, and its not. Im not , I know that bad things happen, but most people do the right thing most of the time. Most people wake up and they try to do whats right for their relationships, whether its marriage or mily. They try to do whats right for their job. They try to make a better world for those around them, and thats what I want to write about.

Nicholas Sparks:There are a lot of people out there who write romance novels. Its a genre thats primarily dominated by women and it really deals with romantic ntasy. You know exactly what youre going to get, the themes are largely the same and they end happily ever after. Thats why you buy the book and thats wonderful. Its not what I do. The [sub-genre] of romantic drama has been dominated by men, whether its Robert James Waller who did Bridges of Madison County, or Nicholas Evans who did The Horse Whisperer, or Erich Segel from Love Story or the guys who wrote Casablanca or Hemingway who wrote A Farewell to Arms.

Sparks:Oh yes, Ive written original and adapted scripts, but I dont offer them because right now [my schedule] is crowded. Ive got this movie, then Im filming another one in May. Youve got to pace these things. Theyll come out eventually. I enjoy the process. Ive written teleplays and did aseries. Would I do it again? Yes, if I have the time, but my time this year is very limited, so when they asked if I would write the screenplay for The Best of Me, I said that I just didnt have time. Ill edit it and go through it.

HollywoodChicago.com:You met your wife in your early 20s. Has your marriage changed the way you view and portray relationships in your novels?

HollywoodChicago.com:Theyll end up watching your movies at their friends house.

[The Lucky One] is a romantic drama and so for that, what you want to do is move the reader or viewer through all the major emotions in life. You want to see the intertwining of the relationships and you want to make the characters feel absolutely real. To make them feel real, you have to see them in every situation. Thats why your mily knows you so well&8212;theyve seen you in every situation. So once you do that, then you begin to root for them, and then at moments youll cry with them. That to me is what a great story should do. It should bring you in, get you lost and linger in the memory for a long time afterwards.

HollywoodChicago.com:Youve written several books about adults as well, and yet youre best remembered for your teenage romances.

Sparks: That is the art of screenwriting, and Im a good screenwriter. I do rewrites. The biggest challenge is not necessarily adapting the novel to the film because you can lay out the major themes. We know who Logan is as a person and that hes on a metaphorical journey, so you can chart that out. Thats not the challenge. The challenge, for me, is to be as involved as I need to be, but no more than that. If I suddenly get more and more involved in every film, they all feel the same. Ill come across things and be like, Oh, thats not something I would write at all, but does it work? The director likes it, the actor likes it, and you have to be able to zip your lip. If you dont allow them that creativity, [the films] will all feel exactly the same, and you just cant have that.

The Lucky One stars Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, Jay R. Ferguson, Riley Thomas Stewart and Blythe Danner. It was written by Will Fetters and directed by Scott Hicks. It will be released April 20 in local theaters. It is rated-13.

HollywoodChicago.com:Youve been very involved in the production of your book-to-film adaptations. What has the challenge been like of externalizing the psyches of your characters without relying heavily on narration?

HollywoodChicago.com:Has screenwriting become as much of a passion for you as writing novels?

The particular process of writing The Last Song was interesting because I hadnt done a teen story in a film script Nicholas Sparkslong time. It had been ten or eleven years since A Walk to Remember, and since that was about a teenage boy, I decided to make this story about a teenage girl. It was right around then that Disney called and said, Miley loved A Walk to Remember, do you have anything? I said, No, but its funny that you should mention that. So I spent the next eight weeks thinking of the story as a novel, not as a film. So whether or not anything happened with Disney later, The Last Song was going to be the next novel. I didnt commit to anything until I had my story.

Sparks:Well 免beian主机, believe me, my wife is not defined by me, darn it! [laughs] Boy, Im going to have to start phrasing it like that from now on because I think youve just hit the nail on the head. They are not defined by their men. Beth is defined by her son. That is the number one male in her life at the present time. She doesnt want to be defined by the ex,film script but she has to live within the reality of the world. Shes defined by the memory of her brother, but not Logan. And Allie wasnt defined by Noah. Thats a very good way to phrase it.

I flew out and talked to Miley, her mily and the people at Disney. They all loved it and were onboard, but they wanted to film it soon and asked me if I could write the screenplay first. So The Last Song ended up being conceived as a novel first, then I wrote it as a screenplay second and then I just took the screenplay and used it as a template for the novel. It was funny because months after I wrote the screenplay, Disney called me and was like, Hey, were going to greenlight this! I was like, Wasnt it greenlit already? Its a good thing I didnt know it wasnt greenlit when I started writing. I might not have said yes. [laughs]

Sparks:Not necessarily. Ive been very fortunate with the adaptations, and Ive liked them all. The one that Ive probably watched the most often with my kids is A Walk to Remember because theyre little. I dont know what well watch when they get older, or if theyll even want to watch a movie with their dad, right? [laughs]

Sparks:Always. Some things definitely work better on film than in books. Introspection is great in books but it doesnt work on film. Anything with high intensity, whether its a love scene, a car chase, a fight scene&8212;those things work so well on film and oftentimes they can tell a much broader part of the story. I can tell you exactly what we did for Safe Haven. Its a very challenging book, so I wrote the [filmmakers] an outline and told them to hand it to the screenwriter. Their responses often were, Well, that wasnt in the book, and Im like, I dont have enough time to do certain things in the book. Ive got to do them in a picture.

Sparks:I dont know that its changed that much. I can say that a lot of these female characters are pretty much my wife in some way. I write the things that I find most attractive in women. I like intelligence, I like passion&8212;give me a little fire, be strong, dont be wishy-washy, do the right thing. When you ll in love, love deeply. Be tough but also be open to the possibility of forgiveness. This is what Ive always found attractive, this is what I end up marrying, and so when I start writing, the female characters end up having the same qualities even if their lives and ages are different. And then, of course, I make these male characters that have to do what I had to do to win my wife. Thats been since the very beginning in The Notebook, so I dont know if its really changed that much. If you look at Beth in The Lucky One, shes doing the right thing, shes passionate, shes not wishy-washy. Shes kind of a different version of Allie [in The Notebook]. So I dont know that its changed, but I also dont know if it wouldve been possible without my wife in the first place.

HollywoodChicago.com:Unlike the in Twilight, your female characters dont seem to be defined by the men in their lives.

The latest is The Lucky One, starring Zac Efron as a Marine named Logan who stumbles upon a picture of a beautiful young woman, Beth (Taylor Schilling), that functions as a sort of good luck charm during his tour in Iraq. Once hes back in America, he embarks on a search to find the woman who may be his destiny. Hollywood Chicago spoke with Sparks about the challenges of adapting his novels into screenplays, his goal to create strong female characters and the real-life romance that has enhanced each of his wildly popular stories.

As a writer, I will tell you that darkness is so easy to make interesting. It is so easy because youre allowed to do anything you want. Try to make Jamie Sullivan [from A Walk to Remember] interesting. Thats just about the hardest thing there is to do. She has to be as interesting to the viewer as Hannibal Lecter. With that said, all of my characters have flaws. Logan has post-traumatic stress disorder, hes got survivors guilt, he doesnt tell the truth right up front, hes not perfect. And Beths not perfect. But theyre still trying to do the right thing most of the time, and when push comes to shove, theyll pull you out of the fire.

HollywoodChicago.com:You co-wrote the script for The Last Song. What was that process like, and would you be interested in writing future scripts?

HollywoodChicago.com:As a male author, what attracts you to writing sensitive romance novels that often involve young people?

Sparks:The movies are fun, but Im a novelist. In many ways, screenwriting is much easier than writing novels. I find screenplays twenty times easier to write than a novel. When I talk to screenwriters, theyre like, Id love to have the freedom of a novel instead of feeling constrained by the structure of a script, and Im like, Yeah, you can say that, but try to invent a structure. Thats hard. You know at this point in the script that youve got to have the twist or otherwise it wont work. I love having the structure laid out for me because it helps to show you whether its working or not.

Sparks:Thats Hollywood, thats what [turns into] movies. [laughs] Nights in Rodanthe and Message in a Bottle were very mature love stories. Depending on who you talk to about The Notebook, the film is either all about Rachel [McAdams] and Ryan [Gosling] or James [Garner] and Gena [Rowlands].

Sparks:Exactly. The one most likely to become a classic is The Notebook, and I say that just because its on cable 35 times a year. Its been around for a long time. The novel was published in 1996 and the films been out for almost eight years now. Thats a long time to keep talking about a movie. I wont say thats because of me. The film had tremendous performances, a tremendous director and producers who had a very specific vision.

Efron is Logan Thibault, also an Iraq veteran 美国主机, who believes his life was saved when the glint of sun off the plastic protector around a photograph lying in the rubble attracted his attention. It drew him a few steps away from where he had been sitting, when he went to pick it up, just as a mortar round took out the friends he was chatting with seconds before.

So he goes to work for her and her grandmother (Blythe Danner), himself invaluable to them and becoming a pal to Beths son. He also becomes an object of jealousy for her ex-husband, who doesnt like having this guy hanging around his ex-wife.

But a good director with a creative screenwriter can distill a touching romance out of even Sparks overblown best-sellers. Indeed, Im sure there are those who will be shocked that I not only enjoyed a lot ofThe Lucky One, but that I think Zac Efrons performance is a break-out moment – the announcement that a teen dream has made the transition to adult dramatic actor.

If you watch Efrons performance in Scott Hicks film of Sparks book (from a script by Will Fetters) honestly, youll see an actor who has both grown and continues to grow. He plays the strong silent hero who walks into a small town in Louisiana and sweeps into the life of a former teacher named Beth (Taylor Schilling). Beth is still grieving for the brother she lost in Iraq and for the marriage that ended because her husband was an insufferable turd (who still happens to be the local sheriffs deputy, which allows him to lurk threateningly).

I know there are those who will never give Efron the benefit of that doubt, because of his vehicle of origin,High School Musical. Or because he was a teen sensation who has grown into a young man who is both very boyish and good-looking. Hey, so was Paul Newman – or Johnny Depp.

Oldman, 53, told the BBC that Nolan and Warner Bros. have taken steps such as not putting the ending in the script to protect it.

Oldman was speaking at the Empire film awards, where he received the best actor prize for his role in Cold War thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

He described the lengths that Nolan and film studio Warner Bros went to to ensure the script remained under wraps.

Strong said the producers wanted the script to be "as secret as possible".

He was not the only actor on the red carpet who described the security measures currently being employed by film studios.

He said the tight security was because the script went into detail on "a lot of CIA procedure" that had been described by "the people who were involved" in the raid.

Oldman said there was also a sound commercial reason for the secrecy surrounding screenplays.

"I&039;d gone out for dinner," the actor explained, "and I had put it in the room between the mattress and the bed, because I couldn&039;t scrunch it into the safe.

"There&039;s a website that gets hold of scripts and reviews films before they&039;re made, so I can understand the paranoia."

Q: At what point did you become comfortable telling Collins about changes you might have to make?

A: Literally, after seeing Jen, if she hadnt done it, Im not sure I would have done it, for real. I really didnt have a second choice in my head.

A: How would that be a negative? It would be hard for me to put more pressure on myself than I do with every movie anyway. Thats for starters. And No. 2, I think thats one of the fun things about this, to be honest with you. Im actually excited about that.

At more than two hours, the film takes its time in getting to the action but is all the better for it.
