Bloom Energy today is breaking ground on a ctory in Newark, Del., to build its Bloom Energy Servers, or Bloom Boxes, which produce electricity from natural gas or biogas.

Sridhar also confirmed thatApples Maiden, N.C., data centerwill use Blooms fuel cells. The data center, now under construction, will have 4.8 megawatts worth of fuel cells powered by biogas. It is expected to be the largest corporate fuel cell installation.

He said he expects rapid growth in fuel cells, but noted its a manucturing-based industry, so the adoption rate wont be the same as software or the Internet. We believe it will take off rapidly but we are building an industry and we need to understand it will be rapid for manucturing, he said.

Apple is an existing customer and they will use our fuel cells in their North Carolina data center, Sridhar said. CNET contacted Apple and will update the story with more information when its available.

Sridhar to declined to say whether Bloom Energy, which was heavily hyped when itlaunched two years ago, has plans to go public or is profitable.

Generating power from a natural gas fuel cell reduces carbon emissions by about 40 percent to 50 percent compared to the U.S. grid, according to Bloom. It converts about 60 percent of the fuels energy into electricity and no energy is lost over transmission lines as happens with the grid, Sridhar said.

California-based Bloom Energy was attracted to Delaware in part by a renewable energy subsidy for fuel cells, which is expected to add about $1.35 a month to residential bills, according to reports. Local utility Delmarva Power also plans to purchase 30 megawatts of fuel cells which would be the largest purchase for a U.S. utility.

But most importantly, they are buying it for reliability because its on site, Sridhar said. Its not just the electrons, they are buying a reliable and clean solution.

The cost of power from fuel cells is roughly the same as the grid in some locations and the payback on a purchase in those places is three to five years. Most of Bloom Energys customers have been in California, which offers a subsidy for fuel cell power generation. Fuel cell power costs also benefit from plummeting natural gas prices in the U.S.

The cility, which was a former Chrysler plant, will have the capacity to turn out 1,000 Bloom Boxes a year, Bloom Energy CEO K.R. Sridhar said in an interview with CNET. Each fuel cell, which is the size of few refrigerators, can generate 100 kilowatts of electric power.

Utilities can add fuel cells to beef up the grid infrastructure in places of growing electricity need without having to build new transmission lines, Sridhar said.

A fuel cell converts the energy in natural gas, or biogas, into electricity in a chemical reaction that gives off almost no air pollutants. Biogas contains methane from the decomposing organic matter. It can be captured from landfills and dairy or pig rms.

But the bulk of the companys customers are corporations, such as Apple, which Sridhar expects to be the case going forward.

There also is potential for another $7.7 million in savings to be generated over the next five years if the IRS virtualizes all its servers, and the report recommended that the IRS do so.

While the IRS completed its virtualization program on time and within budget, it currently has no plans to virtualize additional servers. The agency said there are about 650 servers in field locations that could be decommissioned and made virtual.

The virtualized servers help lower operational costs through standardization, by it easier to load or remove a server from the operating environment, the report said. The virtual servers also reduce hardware downtime, provide automatic load balancing and allows for movement of data before a system ilure. The IRS has realized those data loss prevention benefits on two separate occasions since the virtualization, the report added.

The IG recommended that the IRS Chief Technology Officer identify servers currently located in field offices that could be virtualized, and create a plan to virtualize those servers. IRS management agreed to both recommendations.

Theconversion of physical servers to virtual servers helpsreduce energy and server replacement costs and improve operational efficiency, the inspector general wrote in the report. Its also resulted in millions of dollars in savings as power use has dropped and the cost for the necessary hardware has llen.

Server virtualization is a technology that allows a several virtual servers to run on one physical host. The technology is said to improve hardware utilization, save on electricity, and reduce server replacement costs.

An additional $1.3 million in annual savings is expected to accrue starting in fiscal 2013, as a result of reduced electricity needs, stated the May 7 report from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.

Successfully virtualizing some of its servers helped the Internal Revenue Service save$10.2 million in equipment costs over two years, according to a newreportfrom the agencys watchdog.

The inspector general is recommending that the IRS take advantage of full virtualization.

By virtualizing these remaining servers, the IRS could realize additional savings of approximately $7.73 million, J. Russell George, Treasury inspector general for tax administration, said in a statement. Aside from the cost savings to taxpayers, these actions could help the IRS meet Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative goals, he added.

By October 2011, the project team had established a virtual server environment, with approximately 1,800 virtual servers running on 234 physical host servers at 13 data centers. Another 1,500 servers are expected to be virtualized by the end of fiscal 2012.

The result, according to IDCs Research Director of Data Protection and Recovery, Robert Amatruda, is a simplified tape management platform that saves time and money. This proactive approach to tape management will ultimately lead to significant time and cost savings cost of serversfor storage administrators, he stated.

According to Oracle, the new software will proactively identify issues that can lead to data loss and serve up recommendations drawn from over 40 years of tape expertise. Additionally, said Oracle, the software allows IT staffers to quickly drill-down into detailed drive and media health specifics, allowing them to keep an eye on their tape infrastructures and assure the availability of data stored in their archives.

This creates a more secure and responsive tape storage management environment, said Jason Hick, NERSC Storage Systems Group Lead at Lawrence Berkeley National Labs. Combined with other unspecified tools these are the core capabilities to implement comprehensive intelligent power and cooling management, visualisation, and workload-aware scheduling. My net take is that this is a significantly more important announcement than the last several from HP or any other mainstream server vendor, and it sets a high bar for competitors. In the coming month or two we can expect other competitive announcements, and I think that some pieces of hardware such as PCIe-3, improved memory reliability and performance, and increased integration of flash memory into storage, will be replicated wholly or in part by competitors. What will probably set HP apart is the cumulative impact of their intelligent provisioning, diagnostics and update capabilities, along with the potentials of their service portal and associated services.

Location-aware infrastructure technology- Introduced under the rather opaque term &038;8220;3D Sea of Sensors&8221; (the sensors are not particularly 3D and there is no obvious &038;8220;sea&8221;), HP has introduced some extremely powerful infrastructure management capabilities that provide immediate benefit and can also work as part of a comprehensive DCIM solution. The constituent parts included location-aware racks and servers, intelligent PDUs, and rack-level power capping. Combined with other unspecified tools these are the core capabilities to implement comprehensive intelligent power and cooling management, visualisation, and workload-aware scheduling. Note that in order to fully utilise these capabilities you have to buy into a complete HP infrastructure stack of racks, and PDUs and their associated software, as well as the servers themselves. Looking into my crystal ball, it&038;8217;s pretty obvious that HP has serious designs on the DCIM space, and current vendors with whom it is in &038;8220;co-opetition&8221; should be looking over their shoulders.

My net take is that this is a significantly more important announcement than the last several from HP or any other mainstream server vendor, and it sets a high bar for competitors. In the coming month or two we can expect other competitive announcements, and I think that some pieces of hardware such as PCIe-3, improved memory reliability and performance, beian. and increased integration of flash memory into storage, will be replicated wholly or in part by competitors. What will probably set HP apart is the cumulative impact of their intelligent provisioning, diagnostics and update capabilities, along with the potentials of their service portal and associated services.

Last week HP revealed its next turn of the great wheel for servers with theannouncement of its Gen8 mily of servers. Interestingly, since the announcement was ahead of Intel&038;8217;s official announcement of the supporting E5 server CPUs, HP had absolutely nothing to say about the CPUs or performance of these systems. But even if the CPU information had been available, it would have been a sideshow to the main thrust of the Gen8 launch &8211; improving the overall TCO (particularly Opex) of servers by them more automated, more manageable and easier to remediate when there is a problem, along with enhancements to storage, data centre infrastructure management (DCIM) capabilities, and a fundamental change in the way that services and support are delivered.

cost of servers Not a nation of shopkeepers but a nation of server,Well, actually thats not a ir question as theres nothing in theRackspace survey on server managementto suggest that server hugging is a British national characteristic on a par with morris dancing and cornish pasties. In ct, managers in Blighty are r less likely to be running into capacity problems than their counterparts in the US – but theyre still spending an inordinate amount of time fire-fighting.

While this approach doesnt work as an economic measure, theres clearly a psychological barrier to overcome. The Rackspace survey shows how the desire to own everything isdeeply ingrained into corporate culture. Earlier this week, I was speaking to a friend of mine whod flown across the Atlantic to fix something in the corporate infrastructure – nice for his Air Miles: not so good for the bottom line.

Max is the editor of Cloud Pro. Hes seen profound changes to the IT landscape over his 20 years as a journalist, but believes cloud computing could be the biggest of them all. Hes determined to make Cloud Pro a contributor to the debate.

They will no doubt point to the evidence that things are getting better. The Rackspace research suggests that IT managers are only spending half their time troubleshooting, compared to 56 percent three years ago. But, as Rackspace points out, that still mcost of servers Not a nation of shopkeepers but a nation of servereans that IT departments are spending an estimated 912 hours a year doing nothing but servicing servers (and that doesnt count the time carrying out mundane tasks like software upgrades, patches etc)

But its clear that there are still too many organisations who tied to the notion of running their own servers and putting up with the hassles that entails. Its an approach that sits oddly with the idea that IT departments are being pressurised to cut costs. Lets save money by buying more servers than we actually need and employ extra people to look after them – how does that work as a cost-cutting measure?

Why are we still a nation of server huggers? Thats the question thrown by the Rackspace survey on IT department working practices.

Im not sure how this is going to change.

What ought to happen is that IT managers should keep track of all the time spent in maintaining servers and IT infrastructure and cost it (as well as keeping tabs on their overspend). But they wont because theycost of serversd be admitting to their own errors.

Im sure that when Rackspace carry out another survey in a couple of years,校园微博. well see a further reduction in time spent fire-fighting but there will still be countless hours spent troubleshooting – therell be a bit of hand-wringing and most companies will carry on the same way. And so on.

What will happen is that things will carry on much as before: some IT departments (under pressure from above) will change; some IT managers will be more forward thinking than others and instigate change – the majority will carry on as before.

Of all those companies mentioned, Google gets the most praise for its handling of the 2010 disclosure of the attack on its network. Unprompted, the company was quick to notify the public and, for the most part, provided details about how the attack happened and what the threat risk was to its users. They communicated their thought process and actions pretty clearly, said Peterson. I would expect other companies to try to emulate that whenever possible.

Ive been impressed with Heartland because on you could have said if anybody was going to get killed it would have been them because of the breach, Gunnar Peterson, a security architecture consultant at Arctec Group, said in a recent interview with CNET after he wrote about Heartland as a success storyon his blog. They got seriously hosed on their core line of business. It happened right in the heart of the financial crisis and recession, so people were running for the exits on any possible issue. And they fought back and saved their business.

Sony was the poster child this year of retail breaches, said Jon Gossels, chief executive of security consultancy System Experts. Ive got to believe that type of massive breach is going to shake some confidence and no amount of disclosure or communications can completely clear that. Theyll have to rebuild that confidence and let people know what changes theyve made operationally and technically to prevent that type of breach from occurring again.

We disclosed the situation very quickly, within hours of understanding that there could be customer risk, Fitzgerald said, adding that the company took great pains to communicate with customers and met with many of them personally. These things take time for the ctual information to come out. We are a year out and were still having a conversation about it.

Sonys stock has dropped from above $30 a share to $20 and itforecast last Maythat 2011 operating income in its video game division would significantly decrease as a result of breach-related costs and activities, including rebuilding its security infrastructure and offering identity-theft protection service to affected customers. However, the forecast for its financials overall, including all the other business units, was positive. This diversity of operations helps cushion the breach impact on Sony, whereas Heartland had only one line of business.

The Heartland breach was a huge deal back then, butso many other breaches have occurredsince that the public may be a bit inured to them by now. With stolen credit card numbers, in particular, consumers are likely to be less concerned than when their their personal information like address and phone number are exposed because merchants end up eating the cost of fraud and not consumers.

Heartland Payment Systems CEO said at the timethat the breach had occurred in 2008, but had only been discovered in January 2009. According to theDataLossDB site, the Heartland breach involved 130 million credit and debit card numbers. The company was sued by shareholders, but thesuit was dismissed. In contrast, security experts complained that RSAs communications were vague and iled to provide enough detail for customers to effectively assess their risk when the firm announced its breach a year ago. Many RSA customers were unhappy with how they handled it, said Gossels. They were left for long periods of time not knowing how serious it was, what the implications were for them and whether RSA was going to replace the SecurID tokens that customers use to secure their networks.

But no company that suffers a breach should feel safe from either hackers or disgruntled customers, warns Martin of the Open Security Foundation. Companies cant take it for granted that they are just going to bounce back over time, he said. They may have to struggle and work harder to recoup earnings and restore brand image and customer trust.

Maybe the average person in the U.S., after receiving at least one breach notification or more, maybe they are becoming numb to the whole experience, said Larry Ponemon, founder of the Ponemon Institute.Ponemon released a study this week with Symantecthat found that for the first time data breach costs have decreased and fewer customers are abandoning companies after a breach. Basically, we see a lot of people recognize that a data breach is bad, but it may not be directly harmful to them, Ponemon told CNET.

Contrary to popular belief, data breaches dont necessarily sink a company, studies and survivors indicate.

One company that ultimately iled to survive its data breach is Dutch certificate authority DigiNotar. The firm closed its doors andfiled for bankruptcyafter an intruder was able to compromise its network and generate ke Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates used by online sites to prove their authenticity. Hundreds of the fraudulent certificates were used to try to trickGoogle.com users in Iranand visitors to many other sites, includingMicrosoft, Skype, Twitter, Facebook, the CIA and M16. DigiNotar was criticized for lax security and iling to notify the public about the breach for several weeks. The compromise forced browser makers to blacklist the DigiNotar certificates and Microsoft and Adobe to issue security patches.

The attack spread to HBGary, a separate but related security firm, when hackers used Barrs log-in credentials to get into a Google e-mail server shared with HBGary. While it appears that HBGary Federal is now defunct (the domain is for sale), HBGary was recently bought by government contractor ManTech.

Why is that? Consumers are forgiving, said Wade Baker, director of risk intelligence at Verizon. Consumers will still shop at their vorite retailer and they wont change their bank, but business-to-business firms will choose a more secure partner.

Fitzgerald said the company didnt lose any big customers as a result of the breach and only had to replace tokens for a small percentage of the customer base, despite the ct that the stolen data was used on an attack on at least one company that has been publicly identified: Lockheed-Martin. Meanwhile, RSA took a $66 million charge due to token replacement and other breach-related costs.

Among the many other firms that have weathered breaches are data brokerChoicePointand payment processorPayChoice, as well asTJX, marketing outsourcerEpsilon, global intelligence firmStratforand VeriSign, whichburied the news in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commissionand didnt make a public announcement. Not only is customer data at risk in breaches, but some firms lose valuable source code and other intellectual property, such as Google,RSAand Symantec. Symantecs case was interesting because the company first blamed a third-party for a breach that hackers publicized earlier this year, but then lateracknowledged that its network had been compromised in 2006.

Heartland dealt with a direct negative impact on its financials and its brand, but worked hard to maintain good relations with its customers, said John South, chief security officer, who joined Heartland about nine months after the breach was disclosed. We had overwhelming support from our merchants, he said. So the loss of a customer base for us was relatively small…Not many other companies could have come back from something like this.

And then there isHBGary Federal, another victim of hackers. After learning that CEO Aaron Barr was working to identify members of online activist group Anonymous, hackers broke into the firms computer network, stole sensitive and personal information and potentially incriminating business data and then posted it to the Web. A representative for HBGary Federal could not be reached for comment.

Information sharing to customers and even competitors is key to helping the industry improve its security track record, experts say. Heartland has not only survived since the breach, it has thrived. Its stock price dropped from about $17 a share to under $5 after the breach, but has climbed to just under $30. Revenue has increased during that time by about 30 percent and profit margins are at pre-breach levels, although the company paid an estimated $68 million in costs to settle consumer and credit card claims.

When personal data of more than70 million Sony PlayStation and Qriocity users was compromisedlast year users filed lawsuits and experts said it was a public relations disaster for the multinational company. Part of the problem was that Sony didnt tell customers about the breach for over a week, despite the ct that credit card information was possibly stolen. Also, Sony was vague about the details and the risk to customers, and took more than three weeks to get the service back up as it dealt with additional breaches, including oneaffecting 24 million accounts at Sony Online Entertainment.

Another report released last week came to similar conclusions. Executives worry about lawsuits, brand damage, stock drops and customer loss after a data breach but those fears are usually unfounded, according to thelatest Verizon data breach report. While a few 2011 breach victims estimated their losses to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars, most did not get near to that amount. In ct, the large majority of them emerged relatively unscathed from their troubles. While they were inconvenienced and probably had a sleepless night or two, they returned to normal business operations before too long, the report said. Breaches dont appear to typically have a major long-term impact on stock value.

Brian Martin, president of the Open Security Foundation, which runs the DataLossDB site, agreed, saying invariably the consumers will stick with the company. Part of this due to the ct that many people dont trust that other firms will necessarily do a better job at securing their data. And a larger part of it is because it is a hassle to switch to a new company.
