In 2010, RIM madecertain proposalsthat satisfied politicos and averted a ban, and now its gone one step further — placing 5,000 BES Enterprise servers directly beneath officials noses in Mumbai. Last ll, Klann told us that two separate companies &8212; codenamed &8220;Maverick&8221; and &8220;Cloud&8221; &8212; were looking to build cilities in Prineville using Facebook&8217;s data center designs. &8220;Cloud&8221; isRackspace, the Texas-based cloud computing outfit, which has apparently decided not to build in Prineville. But &8220;Maverick&8221; is Apple.

data server Apple Mimics Facebook With High Desert Data Center,Apple has confirmed that it will build a data center in Prineville, Oregon &8212; next door to themassive computing cility Facebook opened last year&8212; and according to the Prineville city engineer,深圳学生社区. Apple is planning to build a cility that&8217;s &8220;similar&8221; to Facebook&8217;s energy-conscious design, which the social giant has &8220;open sourced&8221; to the rest of the world.

Cade Metz is the editor of Wired Enterprise. Got aNEWS TIPrelated to this story — or to anything else in the world of big tech? Please e-mail him: cade_metz at wired.com.

At its Oregon site, Google pioneered the use of data center modules, piecing together its cility using data servershipping containers pre-packed with servers and other hardware, and others, including Microsoft, have followed suit. It&8217;s unclear whether Apple&8217;s NxGen modules are just a temporary solution or part of its permanent plan for the Prineville site.

Facebook and Apple were attracted to Prineville not only because of the cool air on the high desert, but because the local government isproviding extensive tax breaks. Attracted by similar tax breaks, Google has also built a data center in rural Oregon.

Last week, according to theCentral Oregonian, s were filed with the Cook County Clerks Office that said Apple has purchased a parcel of land near Prineville for $5.6 million. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but the companyconfirmed the purchasewith a local TV station.

The news is another sign that Apple has big plans forits iCloud serviceand other software tools that store user data in the proverbial heavens. But Apple&8217;s plan also reaffirm Facebook&8217;s new approach to data center design. Traditionally, the big internet players &8212; including Google and Amazon &8212; have said very little about the design of their new-age data centers, but Facebook is openly sharing its designs in an effort to improve the efficiency of cilities across the net.

Then on Tuesday, Prineville city engineer Eric Klann tells Wired, the city received a land-use application for the property in question. According to Klann, the application says that development will begin with eight modular data center units built by the San Jose-based outfitNxGen Modular, and if &8220;all goes well,&8221; Klann says, the plan is to build a larger cility &8220;similar&8221; to Facebook&8217;s.

Facebook&8217;s data center uses outside air from the Oregonian high desert to cool its server rooms, eliminating the need for energy-sapping electric chillers, and its electrical system significantly reduces power loss by cutting down on the number conversions between AC and DC power. In April, the company open sourced not only the designs for the data center but also the designs of the servers that work in tandem with its revamped electrical system.

Thats the story anyway. The reality,as best anyone can determine, is more muddled. The evidence suggests that the project indeed existed. However, the beer-diapers correlation may or may not have been supported by the data. And, in any case, Osco seems not to have made any subsequent changes taking advantage of the purported relationship. That the story has lasted so long says more about the dearth of compelling success stories than anything else.

Tesla downplays danger of bricked batteryA report says that drained batteries in five Tesla Roadsters required battery pack replacements. Tesla counters that it takes multiple measures to avoid the problem.

More and more disparate data sets are available online and the tools to analyze them are getting both better and cheaper. Distributed server rms, public cloud-computing resources, open-source software including large-scale distributed file systems and Hadoop are just some of the tools that are starting to make this sort of analysis more mainstream (although many of the data sets are still proprietary and expensive).

As the story goes, they discovered that beer and diapers frequently appeared together in a shopping basket on certain days; the presumed explanation was that thers picking up diapers bought a six-pack when they were out anyway. This correlation was then used to optimize displays and pricing in the stores.

As it turns out, the events recounted in Duhiggs story are not especially recent; Pole did his initial work in 2002. But its not an area of its business Target wants to discuss. In part, this is doubtless because it views what it does with data mining as a trade secret. However, Im sure it also stems from the reality that a lot of people find this sort of analysis at least a little bit creepy (to use the most common word being tossed around the Internet about this story).

In a recent New York Times article,Charles Duhigg wroteabout how Target statistician Andrew Pole was able to identify about 25 products that, when analyzed together, allowed him to assign each shopper a pregnancy prediction score. More important,深圳学生网. he could also estimate her due date to within a small window, so Target could send coupons timed to very specific stages of her pregnancy. Duhigg then goes on to tell a story about how, in one case, Target apparently knew about a high schoolers pregnancy before her ther did.

server optimization Data minings adult challenges, commentaryProbably no data-mining legend has been more pervasive than the beer and diapers story, which apparently dates back to an early 1990s project server optimization Data minings adult challengesthat data-warehousing pioneer Teradata (then part of NCR) conducted for the Osco Drug retail chain.

Crave

But the challenges ahead wont just be technical. Theyll be about what types of mining are considered right and proper and what arent. As the Times noted in its article, someone pointed out that some of those women might be a little upset if they received an advertisement it obvious Target was studying their reproductive status.

For example,Sasha Issenberg wrote in Slate earlier this monththat as part of a project code-named Narwhal, Obamas [re-election campaign] team is working to link once completely separate repositories of information so that every ct gathered about a voter is available to every arm of the campaign. Such information-sharing would allow the person who crafts a provocative e-mail about contraception to send it only to women with whom canvassers have personally discussed reproductive views or whom data-mining targeters have pinpointed as likely to be friendly to Obamas views on the issue. This contrasts with past practice whereby e-mails were more shotgun and stuck to relatively safe and unprovocative topics as a result.

But Im starting to see evidence that this is changing. At least a bit. A lot of hard problems remain. This presentation by Paul Lamere and Oscar Celma(PDF) does a nice job of laying out the challenges with music recommendation, for example. But Im also seeing enough real world data-mining anecdotes that its hard not to take notice.

This isnt to suggest that data mining has never delivered any value. But I think its ir to say that the gap between vendor marketing claims and gaining insights that were actually useful has been considerable. Data mining might tell Home Depot that it sells more snow shovels in the north than in the south and in winter than in summer–but the Home Depot store manager in Minneapolis doesnt need a sophisticated computer system to tell him that. (Though, as Ill get to, more has probably been going on behind-the-scenes than is generally known.)

I went through a demonstration of OnLive Desktop Plus with Steve Perlman, OnLives president, CEO, and founder, who was adamant that this software would make the iPad the stest Flash browser in existence. In a sense, hes correct: OnLives high-speed hard-wired servers do the bulk of the Flash-browsing processing, speeding through load times r ster than most home Internet connections would ever accomplish. From there, the browsing experience is streamed to the iPad with the same technology behindOnLives streaming-game service. The net effect is, according to Perlman, more data-usage efficient for the end user than standard Web browsing.

A speed test run on OnLive Desktops browser via 4G LTE on Android.

Handwriting recognition also works: Microsoft Office on the iPad.

Your optional tools for connecting with OnLive Desktop on an iPad: keyboard and stylus.

Internet Explorer will save bookmarks, and even download files. Thats its chief advantage over the iPads baked-in Sari browser, which wont allow downloads. OnLive Desktops service has restrictions, however: it wont download .exe files (according to Perlman, in order to avoid malware). Also, while Internet Explorer will save bookmarks between sessions, the entire Windows 7 operating system you access in OnLive Desktop will reset for the next session. Files will automatically save in a cloud folder that can be accessed via a Web browser, and OnLive Desktop Plus adds Dropbox compatibility, but you can forget about customizing your Windows 7 settings. Once again,域名注册. according to OnLive, this is to keep subscription prices low and avoid extra maintenance. Youre renting a hotel room that gets cleaned each night.

Android users will be luckier: a future version of Onlive Desktop does indeed have mouse support, but it will support only clicking one button.

OnLive was slated to release a Pro version with more dedicated servers, 50GB of storage, and access to an assortment of other applications, including a Flash-enabled browser, for $9.99 a month; thats hardly inexpensive, and likely to appeal largely to business executives with expense accounts. Todays launch of OnLive Desktop Plus is a surprise half-step: for $4.99 a month, users get the same 2GB of storage, but added access to that long-promised Flash browser; Microsoft Internet Explorer is included; and users also get Adober PDF compatibility, and Dropbox support.

Helping the cause for the first iteration of OnLive Desktop was its price: free. That version had only 2GB of cloud storage, and the Windows 7 environment ran only a suite of Microsoft Office applications (sans Outlook), but for the cloud-curious and those who lack a word processor for their iPad, OnLives streaming solution is a clever way to explore a mobile office.

In testing the service via a provisional test account prerelease, that held true for most Flash sites I looked at, including CBS and Hulu. Incidentally, because this is cloud-based streaming, access to a Flash-enabled PC browser, there are also no Flash restrictions in effect like there tend to be, say, when visiting Hulu from an Android tablet.

The other inevitable problem with cloud access: youre only as good as your home wireless access. OnLive Desktop Plus worked well from my home wireless connection and at my parents house, but at work over our admittedly shaky Wi-Fi access point, I got a message that the network wasnt strong enough to run OnLive Desktop. It took relocating to our stronger Wi-Fi access point in the CNET TV lab to get the service to run again.

OnLive Desktop Plus will eventually be available for Android, Mac, PC, smartphone, and monitor/TV via theOnLive MicroConsole. OnLive Desktop Pro will add 50GB of storage and access to a selection of other, as-yet-unspecified apps. OnLives chief software partOnLive Desktop Plus adds Flash to your iPad, for $ server monitoringners are Adobe, Microsoft and Autodesk (Maya was demoed briefly), which points toward which types were likely to see.

OnLive Desktop Plus adds Flash to your iPad, for $ server monitoring,DuringCES2012, thesurprise appearance of OnLive Desktopwas an intriguing idea for Windows lovers: rent aWindows 7computer remotely, and stream the whole experience to your iPad.

So, heres the $5-a-month question: are you simply better using one of the iPads many office productivity apps and the built-in Sari browser instead? Well, for those dependent on a Flash Web site or the need to download and share attachments, server monitoringOnLive Desktop Plus could be an interesting experiment. Even for a month or so, it could be a viable way to rent a PC when on vacation or working remotely. However, even without rumors ofMicrosoft Office emerging on the iPad, there are too many other ways to get work done on an iPad to make OnLive Desktop Plus essential. Do try the free version, though, and decide for yourself (minus Flash browsing, of course).

OnLive Desktop is currently available from the App Store.

OnLive Desktop, with Android and mouse support.

OnLive Desktop can also play videos and music stored in the cloud, or even play games; a few Microsoft Suce apps ran decently, and Flash games did indeed work in IE (as did Flash ads). Interaction with the Web browser, and with all of OnLive Desktop, is accomplished via touch only. You could use a stylus for added comfort, but the iPad doesnt support a mouse; its touch or nothing. OnLive Desktop does, however, support Bluetooth keyboards. I hooked up theLogitech Tablet Keyboardand typed away on both Microsoft Word and Google Docs within Internet Explorer. The experiment worked, although with more lag between keystrokes than Id prefer. Neither the stylus nor the keyboard is required; an onscreen keyboard offers a nonideal but workable solution, and finger-touching works as well as stylus use.

Windows 7 is waiting for youriPad, along with real, honest-to-goodness Flash browsing. The trick? Its going to cost you.

Of the 10 mobile devices analyzed (or 11 if the iPad is counted), the iPhone ended up about midrange with a load time of 10.81 seconds and a perceived render time of 8.08 seconds. Though not a smartphone, the iPod Touch was included as well and scored slightly behind the iPhone.
